Extra money for lower-income workers, paid with your refund when you file. You must be 19 or older (or live with a spouse or child); full-time students for more than 13 weeks of the year usually can’t claim it.
How is this calculated? (assumptions)
- Official 2026 parameters: five federal brackets (14%–33%), seven BC brackets (5.6%–20.5%), federal BPA $16,452 (phased down at high income), BC BPA $13,216.
- Included: basic personal amounts, Canada employment amount, CPP/EI credits, enhanced-CPP deduction, RRSP deduction, and the BC tax reduction for lower incomes (up to $690 in 2026, phased out between $25,570 and $44,952 of net income).
- Not included: spousal/dependant transfers, tuition, donations, medical expenses, self-employment or investment income — if these apply, your real result will differ.
- The Canada Workers Benefit (CWB) is included based on your choice in item ④: 27% of working income above $3,000, up to $1,665 (single) or $2,869 (family), reduced by 15% of net income above $27,392 (single) / $31,251 (family) (the CRA’s published 2026 amounts). The family case uses your income only.
- Assumes you are a BC tax resident all year with T4 employment income only.
How tax brackets really work (a common myth)
- Canada uses marginal rates: when you cross into a higher bracket, only the income above the line is taxed at the higher rate — everything below it is unchanged.
- So turning down income "to stay in a lower bracket" is a myth — earning more always leaves you with more.
- The right way to use bracket awareness: RRSP deductions are worth most in high-rate years; in low-income years you can carry the room forward and deduct later.
- Families note: the CCB is reduced as income rises (7%–23% depending on the number of children) — a real "hidden rate", but you still come out ahead by earning more.
