≈ you and your spouse’s 2025 line 23600 net incomes added together. New to Canada and haven’t filed yet? Use your family’s yearly income as a rough stand-in.
How is this calculated?
- Maximums: $8,157/year per child under 6; $6,883/year per child 6–17.
- Full amount below $38,237 AFNI; reduced by 7%–23% (depending on the number of children) between $38,237 and $82,847; a second-tier formula applies above that.
- Not included: Child Disability Benefit, 50/50 shared-custody splits, provincial benefits.
New to Canada — do you qualify?
- The child lives with you and you are the primary caregiver; you or your spouse is a tax resident (study/work permit holders generally qualify after 18 months — see CRA form RC66).
- Both spouses must file a tax return every year (even with zero income) to keep payments coming.
- You can apply as soon as you arrive — file RC66 (+RC66SCH) or apply in CRA My Account.
